Dec 2010: Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 AD. This culturally evolved city flourished between 850 AD and 1300 AD, reaching its peak under Parakramabahu in 12th C. Above: ruins of the Lankatilaka temple, housing a 46ft headless statue of Buddha.
Sampaguita, a variety of Jasmine, is very important as a daily offering to Buddha in Sri Lankan rituals. So much so that in 17th century Lanka, the King granted land to a set of officers who cultivated these flowers for the rituals on that land, and were even allowed to confiscate others' land for this purpose.
