Dec 2010: Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 AD. This culturally evolved city flourished between 850 AD and 1300 AD, reaching its peak under Parakramabahu in 12th C. Above: ruins of the Lankatilaka temple, housing a 46ft headless statue of Buddha.
