Oct 2007: Water in a lake freezes from the top down. Water is most dense at 4 degrees Celcius, and the entire lake must get to that temperature before the top freezes. Snowflakes mix with salts and remain snow even upto 10 degrees Celcius. Taught in primary school, but still continues to fascinate. The snow in this picture may be warmer than lake water, and water may be denser than the snow pack.

The Lichen Meter

Oct 2007: A mountaineer once told me in the High Sierras how reddish-orange lichen-covered rocks are bio-indicators of air purity. Though I have not found much material on this topic, I have encountered these lichens only in the mountains, above a few thousand feet of altitude, and close to a water source. Anybody knows more about this? This one was adjacent to the rocks at the top of Upper Falls of Yellowstone River.

Oct 2007: Smooth, serene, aloof and graceful existence above the surface. Hot, bubbling, perpetual and monstrous chaos below the surface. We stand on 17 million years of cataclysmic geological changes and find serenity. We stare at the ball of fire 100 million miles away and find peace. This lonely bush vegetating on the grand prismatic plateau reflects this irony, or should we say the plateau reflects its irony.

Oct 2007: As water turns to snow, leaves turn their color. As snow falls on leaves, leaves fall on snow. The seasons are turning a leaf at Jenny Lake, Grand Tetons National Park.
